Would it be possible to implement special abilities tied to equipment? For instance, I've seen monsters who do not counter attack and I've seen monsters whose attacks doesn't allow for counter attacks. Would it be possible to introduce the same sort of concepts tied into certain weapons?
Some ideas:
First strike - when defending the unit deals damage to the attacker first.
Charge - e.g. on lances, first attack following movement causes double damage.
Armor piercing - significantly reduces the opponents defense rating (maybe add this to blunt weapons and then balance out the attack rating compared to cutting weapons).
Shield - increases defense against ranged attacks.
Yes, these are concepts pretty much lifted right out of MoM, but I still feel that it could provide some added depth to the tactical aspects of combat. As it is, you just need some archers to soften up the attacking units and then a couple of hard hitters to take down the weakened units once they've made it to you lines.
