I did a search on the topic, but never uncovered any information if they actually put in "Wonders of the World" in this game (I pre-ordered, but missed the beta date), all I read were people talking about it, and it seemed like it was many pro opinions on the matter. Did they?
I thought it was be a nice feature, and it could also add a bit of flavor and spice to individual cities. If they have it where only one particular wonder can be created anywhere in the world and if you don't own it, then your only options are is taking the city that does by diplomacy or force.
This could also be a another ending to the game, perhaps collecting a certain 3 wonders and you win? Such as the [Great Library of Magic], the [Cathedral of War], and the [Tower of Elements]. When you complete these a monster shows up on the map, with a giant gateway behind it. If you beat the monster (aka, simply known as 'The Guardian') you can enter the portal and gain supreme power, potentially as a god at that point.
From a story time-line perspective, the Titans came and warred for control, then came the cataclysm, in the ruins mankind embarked on recreating civilization and finding lost magics. Eventually the immortals themselves became gods (which could open up to a EWoM expansion, where the players are pretender demi-gods vying for godhood, either by crushing their opposition, creating alliances (a pantheon with other demi-gods), or opening a portal via Wonders to the 'Outerworld' for ultimate power.
I suppose for cosmetic purposes of your main demi-god, they can toss in options for glowing eyes, flowing robes, etc. Ok, I'll shuddap. I can sit here all day and spew out stuff. Also, I'm aware I started going off on a tangent.
