Civ V Collectors Edition is Trying to Copy Elemental

So now they got figurines

The Civ V special edition is now throwing in some figurines. I think it's a blatant attempt to copy Elemental's Pewter Dragon. What a bunch of copycats.

Note: Yes, in all seriousness I know that Elemental isn't the first game in the world to ship it's special edition with a figurine of some kind. I just think it's odd that suddenly Civ V is doing it too.

Heh, or at least odd that its suddenly announcing it.

I think the 160+ page Art book and the Pewter Figurines kind of well ... is a fiendish copy of Elemental's limited edition.

 

Still, its probably less of a direct copy and more of a "How can we increase sales?" ploy ... and that ploy led to copying Elemental.

I think the original Civ V special edition was just planning to have the behind the scenes footage + soundtrack CDs + extra civ (I guess), and it was called the Delux Edition ... and it was Steam only Digital only.

 

Now ... the Special Edition looks like its either something completely different from the Steam "delux edition" or its an expansion of the original idea and now is both Digital and Physical.

Not sure which is which ... but I can guess that their Digital "delux" edition failed sales wise

I was hoping for an actual functioning Fire Shard, but I guess that'll have to wait until the Elemental 2 SE.  How about a live pet Trog while I wait?

If they're "copying" elemental it's because they didn't think of doing an artbook and figurine on their own (suggesting a lack of creativity) and some marketing manager started poking around the internet and by chance found what Elemental was doing. Just my thoughts.

They are all copying Demigod then.  So there. 

edit - also, how about dropping the figurines, bumping the price $120, and throwing in some night vision goggles.  You know, for when it... get's dark... or to see elves.  It would be good WTF marketing you know. 

CEO Brad Wardell bundles nightvision goggles with Super Limited edition of Elemental.  When asked to comment, Wardell indicated that night vision goggles are "bad ass" and he likes to turn off the lights in the office and shoot people with nerf darts during coding breaks.

Bioshock's Collectors edition came with a (rather large) Figurine. And before that Medieval Total War 2 Collector Edition came with a figurine, and art stuff.

And before that there were many more. For an example Warhammer 40K Final Liberation came with a Space Marine miniature.

My Burning Crusade collectors edition came with an artbook too. Darn everybody is copying Elemental!

How do you figure? It's still there, it's $40 less, and it comes with the best part: the soundtrack.

This is for people who think an artbook and figurines is worth $40. For the people who just want the soundtrack, Steam has you covered. Seems like a good plan to me.

Special Editions and Collectors editions of games were around long before Stardock and Elemental. CIV V isn't copying Elemental they are coping other productions that were around long before Stardock an Elemental. I have pewter figurines and a nice gold tin box collections from Everquest mmorpg editions and cloth maps from Ultima's and a huge Lord of the Rings map from War of the Ring editions. So this is nothing new nor is it because of Elemental.

hmm, what did special editions of Civilization III and Civilization IV offer?

 

When did Civ V first announce its special edition w/ book + figurines?

 

Does Civ V special edition also have the Babylon civ?

By the same token that Civ5 is copying Elemental, Elemental is copying every game before it which offered figurines.

Just because they're close together release wise and are a bit more similar doesn't mean they're copying.

If Civ5 came with a pewter dragon, OTOH...

Exactly case closed: Civ V did not copy from Elemental. Like was said Elemental copied from every other publisher out there who included maps, artwork and pewter stuff. Civilization series has been around a LOT longer than Stardock and Elemental combined.

Not really, as Stardock was founded in 1991 and GalCiv for OS/2 was released in 1993.  Civilization was released in 1991.

But yeah, claims that Civ V copied Elemental are a little silly.

Well the jokes on them... My interest in Civ 5 is less then zero.

Elemental... It's preordered.
