Internet connection required for Elemental?

Do you need to be connected to the Internet in order to play Elemental?  I am usually online, but this afternoon my lights went out, which immediately killed my wireless connection.  I tried to boot-up Elemental Beta 3 on my laptop but was greeted by an error message indicating that I wasn't connected to the Internet!  I couldn't get the Beta up and running until my power was back.

I hope a constant Internet connection won't be required to play the actual game!

It shoudln't be. It's possible it is for the Beta for some reason.

The betas so far have been downloading data from the servers, which allowed SD to tweak some stuff without having to push patches. In Beta 4 (modding) and release, all the data files will be local and the server connection won't be required.

When the game goes live and out in the real world. Per a post it was stated that the retail box version 1.00 will have absolutely NO DRM on it at all. You can put it in and play, without ever updating it.

Once you've got the game updated though, you do NOT have to be connected to the internet to play (excepting obvious MP games against others on said internet).

And also you do NOT have to keep Impulse up and running, or connected all the time. This isn't Steam and they don't want YOU the customer to have a bad experience.

It's just the beta right now they need a connection from what I've gathered. That's it though.
