From the looks of things you were strangling your economy in the early game. Most of the replys gave some good advise. I would heed it, Also try different methods. No one person plays sins the same way, because the game is different each time you load a new map. The veterans rejoiced at the pirate buff, but new players are going to have a very hard time with the diplomacy pirates.
What i do...
1) the very first thing.. build cap factory, and 1st cap ship. I prefer a battleship, but the choice is yours.
2) build 1 colonizer, 2 scouts and then max the level 1 fleet cap out with light frigs.
3) build 1 combat, and 1 civilian lab at your starting planet u may have to wait for credits to do this. While you are waiting send your fleet out and cap some asteroids. Dont try to cap the desert, volcanic and ice worlds just yet. Focus on the asteroids for now. you just need to cap a couple. The FIRST reasearch you should research is terran planet upgrades (desert, and terran if you are advent). This will boost your economy. Dont forget to upgrade your infrastreucture, and build extractors at the roids you capture. If you have the spare credits research metal and crystal upgrades, and boost your economy more.
By this point pirate raids should be starting. Just out bid on the bounty if you dont want them to come after you.
Start building more labs at the roids you captured. you can only build 1 if you dont upgrade the logistics. Thats ok just build 1 civilian and one military at a different roid. By now you should have most of your tier one military and civilian tech researched. Research tier 1 fleet cap. and LRM tech. Start building LRM's to boost your fleet. You may want to research tier 1 cap ship crew as well, and start building your second cap. Once you have 2 cap ships, LRM's and a sizable tier 1 fleet you can start taking on the defenders of the desert, volcanic, and ice worlds. You will also start to be able to handle the pirate raids (in Original sins, and entrenchment).
When you start to see scouts from other factions its time to start building some defenses, because almost immediatly after scouts arrive so do the siege frigates. Turrets are useful in the early game, but like was said they become useless as time goes on. Focus on hangar defenses in the mid to late game.
Sins takes practice to truly learn. once you figure out the mechanics and your own play style things can be quite fun.
