Geography

Hey guys I haven't been on the forums for awhile so I was wondering if anyone knew about some info on the map geography or if anything has been confirmed. Here are some questions:

1. Are grasslands, deserts, and snow deserts (i guess) confirmed to be areas on a map?

2. Can you build cities in mountain ranges or in forests? Cause that would be sweet.

3. Do these different enivironments have attributes;cause things such as slower movement?

4. (this one is pretty off topic) Are different village types being implemented (such as fishing,mining,farming,trading)? Also will there be forts instead of normal villages?

Thanks I'd appreciate if I wasn't scrutinized lol.

4. It seems there will be different types of villages if only because you only have so much room to build things and also due to resource location. I would answer this as Yes although in an organic way.

yea ... I'd like for small towns to be able to be built on mountain trails/passes, and thich Ancient forests. Although possibly only with a rare-tech prereq.

I do know that there are going to be many different types of forests, for example. Like, red wood, pine, the magic kind, etc, and apparently there's going to be a difference. I've also heard that they are planning on making numerous sorts of terrain. I really can't tell you much other than that.

1. Yup.
2. Sweet, indeed. Would be nice if that got implemented, but it's not crucial, imho.
3. Apart from different movement costs, I don't think so. Although, I think that every type of terrain will have a set of exclusive bonus tiles (or other things), so it will be unique in some way.
4. There is no need to implement such 'explicit' system. You found a port city (ie. city near a sea), and what you build there is up to you. What we don't know at the moment is the presence (or absence) of water-based structures, but basing on the 'feel' of the game, I doubt we will see them.

Alright thanks guys for the info im a little disapointed but interested at the same time with the different village types. I like how they are going to feel more organic but I hope you don't have the ability to make every city you found a metrolpolis.

And thats a good idea Tasunke but maybe have it a special ability instead of a tech? then you could have an ancient forest city or something like that instead of only being able to found them in late game. And ya its also not crucial and would not ruin the game for me if it wasn't implemented.

Wow! Really? That is awsome. Maybe they will have different ore types as well (I was part of a conversation about it in like June or something lol). But ya thats definately gonna be cool. Maybe you get different bow types from this.

I would imagine that by release we will be able to build cities in forests. The engine just doesn't understand that concept yet, and I'm not sure if there will be any complications. (I mean, if we couldn't build cities in forests, that would be silly) I can imagine requiring "clear cutting" or something researched before towns can be directly built into forusts. Perhaps a similar technology could allow cities to be built in mountains?

Oh? has that been confirmed? (red wood vs. pine. Magic forests are another ball park) I know that forests found in "swamps" are not your normal forests.

It's not like a "confirmation" but the developers definitely want something like this to happen, whether it comes from us or them. Redwoods vs. pine was specified. I mischaracterized the situation in the statement I made previously.
