Every school has sports. Obviously, some of the sports differ greatly in intensity and talent…. But all-in-all, all participants should be rewarded with a Varsity letter to represent their hard work….
There is the life long argument that will continue on for the rest of time… the “sport” of cheerleading. Now, I know that it is a sport. It is an extremely vigorous sport. It requires flexibility, strength, good sound projection, and balance. And they go to a camp and have practices just like the band.
So… they have a letter when we don’t.
The band has to use EXTREME teamwork. It is the only sport that I can think of that when one person makes a mistake…. We all look bad, and that mistake cannot be fixed later on like soccer, football or baseball. And it is not a winning or losing sport… it is all opinion on how we play. One person can say we did horrible, while another can think we did great.
It takes practice… lots of practice. And it is the only sport (I can think of right now) whose "playing" season lasts all year round at our school. Yes, we get a “band letter” which is not the same as a Varsity letter for the simple fact that they don’t even consider it a varsity sport.
If cheerleaders can scream and yell at football games 4 months out of the year and get a Varsity Letter… then I don’t see any problem with giving the band a Varsity Letter…
Who goes and plays actual music at every football game, home basketball games, and goes to contest and doesn't recieve any credit?
Other schools offer their band a Varsity Letter… so why doesn’t our school?

(I am not putting down cheerleading in any way. We have two excellent cheerleaders who are in the band also. And I do recognize that it is an extremely vigorous sport that I know I could NEVER do.)
