A campaign and perhaps a campign editor might be in the surprise expansion (that's the third...). But none of the developers gave a clear yes or no on anything... But there is still hope...
That's exactly my hope too.
Perhaps a meta-map campaign like in the Dawn of War games would work? Conquer the galaxy with one race, with plenty of special missions among the standard skirmish ones with extra hard missions on the races homeworlds and other important systems.
