64 bit OS & map size

"People play campaigns in Dungeons & Dragons in the real world that last for years. We could do that with 64-bit. We couldn't do it with 32-bit because you can't make the landmass that big -- that's been a big memory limitation," he claimed. "If someone wants to play a game that lasts for three years, who are we to stop them?"

if this very exciting feature is implemented, will it work with Readyboost along with system RAM?

Yep, by then there will be no difference between player vs player and player vs AI
Both will be sentient beings lol

The AI will even call you gay and disconnect if it's losing .

with a 64 bit OS how big will tacticle battles be? around 5,000 units like total war? or 10,000 (in this case i will preorder immediatly)?

I think it may be a differently scaled system, but that kind of thing is quite liable to change.

Grrr ... I was very happy with my stable 4-year old, 32-bit, Windows XP system ... Now, I'll have to pressure my dad for another gaming comp with a 64-bit Vista OS.

Already equipped for this, but I assume that by the "Coming soon" *cough* *cough* 2010 release date I'll have gone through another upgrade cycle.

Glad to hear there won't be any "toying" and that you're actually intending for a fullblooded 64-bit version with some nice benefits. I'm scheduled to be pre-ordering just in time for the beta.

I knew there was a reason I picked the 64-bit version of Vista (beyond being allowed to go beyond 4 gigs of ram, anyway).

Its true. I'm actually really excited for this 64-bit version. Before there was no reason for me to do it, but now there is going to be. At least to duel-boot. I can't wait.

Its also nice to get confirmation of how it is going to work. I wonder if that means the single-player will have different maps.

HOOORAY !! This is really state of the art designing, thinking and planning. Kudos to you! I've seen so many games where the map size limitation prevented me from experiencing a life size world game. Even today only Dominions_3(with patches) and Civilization_4(with smart_tool) have provided satisfying large sized maps.

I have two seperate systems which dual_boot between a 32_bit OS and a 64_bit OS... so I'll be ready to help. If necessary I could upgrade the 64_bit operating systems into Vista, but let's hope that's not necessary.

In addition, 32 bit windows has a strange limit of a max size of a single datastructure of 512MB (I think.. dont remember exactly). I dont know if there is such a limit in 64bit windows (or what the limit is)

That limit was what caused the main problem in Civilization4 (before BTS).. reason for this was that the game would put all the game data into one big buffer before compressing it when saving the game.. if the game tried to put more than 512MB of data in this buffer, then the game got an out of memory error even if the process was still far from using 2GB memory.

I have a 64 bit ready laptop (man it's new two months old) But i have a 32 bit os. Can I upgrade it to 64 bit and is that cheap or expensive?
