what's up with this dark website?

I 've been reading this forum for a couple of weeks and everytime I start I need to crack the brightness up to 100 on my monitor, just to be able to read many parts. Today I found that there were page number jumps under each topic. I only found them by the tool-tip that popped up while I hovered the mouse close to them.

I realize that your looking for a unique, good-looking style; but this style hides a lot of content. Can you offer an alternate version that can be read at normal screen brightness by older users?

Dan, my eyes are aging also (I zoom in on almost every web page I read), but what you describe sounds like you might have a local system problem related to an aging monitor or odd display settings in the OS.

I've viewed this site for years from a variety of hardware setups and browsers. Readability-wise, I'm no fan of light-on-dark schemes, but after I zoom in I've never had problems reading the UI elements or primary post text (there are still some white-on-nearly-white quote blocks that I can't read without hurting myself).

If you really get into GC2, I hope you can find a solution to this problem. The in-game info and the manuals are not strong--I've learned far more from reading around here than I ever did reading the PDFs or the UI verbiage.

Actually you need to mention the website that you're refering to because Stardock has 11 forum websites and 2 "blog" webistes and most if not all can post to the shared Off-topic program.

Each website has a somewhat different font, background etc. although most of the time "game" sites have a dark backgrounds and "software" sites have a light background.

I was refering to the Sins of a Solar Empire Forum, Mumblefratz. Thanks for the tip.

Not knowing which website GW was refering to prevents a response except to say I only need to boost brightness for the SoaSE site. All other sites are easily viewed at normal brightness...

Apologies; I hide out in GalCiv2 land, and I'm still not entirely comfortable with some danged inner-net Interstate having come through the little neighborhood I used to know...

I've never seen the Sins site (RTS is *not* my thing). Over here, the background is black and the UI text is a bold orange that stands out pretty well. But the Sins site is newer, and from my general web experience, the newer a site is, the less easily readable it is. Sort of an online extension of the overall decline in literacy here in the US, as far as I can tell...

It is strange that skinning is such an integral part of Stardock's business and yet they don't provide selectable options for any of their websites as far as I know. Even just a choice between dark versus light background can make a huge difference. I always select the light background/dark text where at all possible, but in general I am able to make out pretty much everything on the GalCiv2 site although I do find myself occasionally using the +125% zoom.

I've found a work-around. If one does a "Select All", from firefox's Edit menu (after the page loads), then most of the text will be hi-lighted and this makes it much easier to see all the too-dark-to-see elements. It's surprising whats on these pages!?

What would really be helpful would be a greasemonkey script...

Hello Dan. You can zoom into a webpage in FF. Hold CTRL and the + or - key. You can also CTRL and use your mouse wheel. This should make it much easier for you to read any webpage. FF2 only does this for the text, but FF3 also zooms all of the graphics/images. FF3 will also remember the pages you modify in this way, so you won't have to mess with them again. As you zoom, the font will get bolder, making it even easier to read.
