Need help getting Civilization: A Call to Power to run on XP

Having seen the post asking for peoples strategy gaming experiences, it reminded me that I haven't played a call to power for years, not since I updated my computer etc. So thinking it would be nice to take a trip down memory lane, I installed it onto my computer and had a go. Only problem is, it crashes straight to desktop as soon as I click play. I've looked on all the forums I could find (most of which are deader than a Tyrannosaurus) and tried the things they've advised on there in the past but have had no joy. Well, I could get it to go to a black screen with the hand curser on before crashing to desktop but that's it.

Can anyone out there offer any more advice? Someone must have managed to get it running out of all the people playing GCII and posting on these forums so I'm hopeful someone can give me a few hints.

I have an AMD Athlon processor with 512mb of ram and a gforce7200 card (I think) if that makes any difference.

Hm...if i remember right, Call to Power ist based on DOS anyhow it was running in Windows 95 and ME. So, if you want to get it running the first idea is to run it in windows compatibility mode (right-click on the exe and define it in the properties).

Second idea would be to run it in a DOS enviroment with DOS BOX. Last time i tried this with Ascendency on my WinXP 64 machine without any problem.

Hope this will fix it....

DOSBox is cool, but it's DOS only: It won't run Windows 9x applications.

Try using Virtual PC instead.

You could right-click on the icon, go to the Compatibility tab, and check the box to "Run this program in compatibility mode for: and choose Windows 98". The other options there may help, too.

DosBox is also a great method.

And if you haven't played it, Civ IV rocks. You can get it with the first expansion for $40. It's both the same as ever, but with nice tweaks that make it more fun and less overly complicated.
