What's the Difference Between Dom/Sub and Patriarchy?

This one's puzzled me for a long time.

I have found that many liberals have no problem with the dom/sub lifestyle, but frown heavily on the patriarchal lifestyle. And yet, many conservatives are the reverse: the patriarchal lifestyle is ok, but a dom/sub relationship is "deviant".

I would like to know, honestly, that in a CONSENSUAL relationship, how can you truly justify one as wrong and the other right? The key word here is "consensual", as there's an obvious problem when the role is forced upon another, through physical or psychological means.

I'd love to hear your comments on this.

I couldn't agree more...in a consensual relationship, why should anyone who is outside said relationship really CARE what the situation is, as long as no one is being abused in any way, shape or form? Live and let live, why doncha?

I agree with you Gideon... if its consensual between 2 (or more if the conditions are right), then I don't see why anyone should really have a problem with it. I think this might also apply to your recent article on polygamy as well... after all, that would be between multiple consenting adults, wouldn't it.

I understand what the dom/sub lifestyle is (in theory), but am unsure of what you mean by patriarchal. Is it that the "father" has a relationship with the "daughter/son/child". If so, it seems to me where the problem lies is in the age of consent.

The dom/sub relationship would almost exclusively be entered into by adults. It probably takes that long to get to know yourself well enough to know that is what you truly are. I suspect the journey to dom/sub is a slow one. First you start with regular sex (hetero or homo) and then you move to more "deviant" sex, typically... (I like to think of it as more flavorful sex, but hey, that's just me.)

The patriarchal relationship inherently has a member that is POTENTIALLY below the age of consent. My opinion would be that the child in the relationship can't consent until they have become and adult, which means the child has to leave a patriarchal relationship with real daddy and then come back to it with sugar daddy in order for it to be CONSENSUAL. An adult can choose to turn over their rights/control of their life to "daddy", but by the age of adulthood, daddy might not find them so attractive... Howver, if daddy still thinks you're hot, and you want to - go for it...

I suspect that conservatives like the "patriarchal" relationship because it somewhat mirrors the ideal of the nuclear family. A person choosing patriarchy appears to support the conservative ideal by attempting to copy portions of it. Imitation being the most sincere form of flattery... If you like me, i like you...

The patriarchal model is where the man's in control.


I don't see why anybody would have a problem with one and not the other. I think it's because of that feminazi idea that women should be able to choose what they want to do with their life, except if it's to be a housewife.

eww, no.

Patriarchy is the belief common to older Jewish and Christian sects that the man is the head of the household and the woman is subordinate. I am not endorsing it, just asking if there's really a difference between that and dom/sub IF and ONLY IF it is a consensual relationship entered into willingly.
