Dude, that cd-key is probably (99% certain) just the one from the most distributed pirated copy of the game availible online. Hence it was a person from that crack-group that bought the game and wrote that cd-key along with the dvd-image files.
So no poor gamer that buys or bought the game will be affected.

However, there is absolutely no reason to "report" your friend, since as i said, he probably just downloaded it off the internet and burned it, and didnt actually do the "pirating" on his own. He's just a downloader like 99% of everyone else.

Now, if you dont want to use it, just put it in the trashcan. There is no need to be melodramatic about this. Dont want it? Throw it away. Simple as that.
What would i do? I would install it, play it, and hopefully enjoy it.
And then i would buy the game, even if it would be shipped form another country. Shipping fees arent THAT bad, if you can afford a place to live you can afford a game.

I did however pre-order the game directly from stardock online, as i knew i wouldnt be dissapointed!

If you are bothered by piracy, you shouldn't have accepted it in the first place. And no one is going to give you permission to use it, so this post is kinda confusing.

You live in the Philipines, eh?

So, you're telling me you live in South East Asia (the very HUB of piracy itself: I should know. I grew up there.) and don't know how piracy even works? That serial number you have there probably doesn't even exist on the database since it will be generated via simple algorithm. That keygen won't let you update your game, let alone let you play online. I have no clue why someone would need a keygen for this game since you can play it without CD key... but hey; the pirated version of GalCiv gold had the key inside. You still couldn't do anything with it but it was there.

If on the very, very, small off chance that some genius decided to buy the game, then burn it, then give other people his CD key... well... I dunno. Smack the fella and rip off all his cash?

P.S: Yes. I bought the game. I can play online.

As for everyone else, thank you for your responses. I wasn't sure what that key was, so I was wondering if Stardock could track down the user or something.

Anyway, I guess I'll wait for the demo. Thanks for the info though.

I think Stardock has some very progressive policies on not requiring cd keys/cds,
which makes gamers lives a whole lot easier.

And no doubt there are probably members of the youngest generations of gamers who are happily filled with glee that they only have to convince their parents to buy one copy of this game ( ie siblings ).

But like the guy a couple of posts before me said. If you can afford a place to live, and all the accroutements that go with it, then you can support game developers by buying the game.

Ironclad listens to gamers and has obviously made a wonderful game, seems like its in your and our best interest to support and reward that type of developer behavior by coughing up the dough for the true game.

And from my experience in that neck of the woods while in the service, if you try you should be able to get a card with cash value to order the game from total gaming.

Yup. My friend had my best interests in mind... but didn't factor in that I'm not really into piracy. Ah well. Thank you though.

Hello again.

As I've previously mentioned, I'm a gamer who lives in the Philippines and who, under normal circumstances, can't readily pick up a copy of the game because they don't ship it here and because I don't have any form of online currency.

As a Valentine's Day gift from a friend, I was just given a pirated copy of Sins of the Solar Empire, complete with the serial number of someone who probably bought the game specifically to pirate it.

I don't want to play the game with a pirated copy, even if I know that it'll probably work, so I have one important thing to say, followed by a personal dilemma.

Who can I report the missing/stolen 25-digit serial code thingy to so that the owner can be properly informed or chastised for piracy issues related to his copy?

More importantly for me, personally, what do I do with this circular piece of temptation that's sitting right beside at the moment? Destroy it?

the op could of just asked his friend how he pirated the game. surely his friend would of told him what most people are telling him here. surely he knows that the cd key is one used by all those thousands of other pirates who pirated the game..

Perhaps... but there is no harm done in posting online. By posting here, he got his answer satisfactorily; asking his friend might have incurred abuse or otherwise, but either way he gets more different opinions on here. As an example, see redlabmb's post - constructive, and not the sort of thing his friend would have suggested.

It's okay. I kinda understand. I don't like being told what to do myself, unless I'm asking for advice.

For your information though, I asked him, and he said he bought it at a store that sells pirated games. For under $5 too. Why he told me the price of his "gift" I'll never understand though.
