Very Dissapointed?

Well after playing about 10 games, I've come to realize that there are some pretty big flaws in the game.

1. Its too slow, and takes way too long to finish a game, and I've only played on small random. I played one multiplayer game, and my opponent disc. after 40 mins. Probably due to pirates.

2. In all 10 games, I've fought my "actual" opponent twice. The other times its all been me vs. pirates. When I see them come with like 15+ ships, I usually just quit, becasue its really stupid. From reading the forums, its clear 90% of the player feel the same way.

3. There is nothing to do in this game but wait for resources, which clearly means they don't generate fast enough so that we can buy stuff. This contributes to the slow factor... This game needs to be at least 5x faster so that games can be played within a reasonable period of time. Games that take hours to finish, skirmish wise, fail.

4. I think once IGN rates this game, its over... We will all move on... Sigh...

This clearly is not the game for you. Move on. There's no such thing as a 'quick' 4x.

BUT this game is a RTS , not 4x... it does have 4x elements.

Its a real time 4x. I find it resembles a 4x more then a standard rts. Which is fine for me. I love this game. And tho pirate raids are annoying they arent hard to repel.

I've also noticed that the coverage in some of the print mags has been a little confusing. Gameinformer's preview of Sins left me wondering just what kind of a game it was.

Since playing the game I have to say that it kind of defies description. I want to call it an rts but its not; I want to call it a 4X game but its not. It really is a weird mash up of the two genres. I have to say that I like the change of pace so far. I haven't played any traditional rts's recently but maybe that is because they have become sort of 'cookie cutter' and similar. Also I haven't played much 4X recently either, but that's just because there hasn't been one released in quite a while to my knowledge.

Anyway, that's my two bits

I like how the elitist fan base of this game can't read and comprehend someone's points without mocking him.
1 Yes - the game is too slow. That does not mean 'make it a fast game.' It means the game is too slow.
2. I have also had a problem with the pirates. They are a major annoyance and contribute to people disconnecting after the half hour mark, which means everyone in the game just wasted half an hour doing nothing but sit and wait for resources.

Someone who says "it's over once IGN reviews it" making the ridiculous assumption that his opinion is the only valid one DESERVES to be mocked.

No. The game is not too slow. The game has 3 speed settings. I bet you 10 to 1 that the OP never changed any of the default settings to meet his preferences.

Do people really buy a game based solely on the front of the box? Flip open the cover and it tells you explicitly what this game is about, and if that's not enough, you can always read online articles. People really have no excuse for making an uninformed purchase.

And our opinions are that his are stupid.

In my current game, I'm not even moving my ships to beat pirate raids. My defenses usually smash them away, and they're three to four times the size the OP QUITS over.

hah i like the pirates you just need to use them againest your opponate. It would be to strait forward without them.

I cut short his complaints and distilled them down for easier reading.

1. Its too slow[...]

Only compared to frenetic, 30-second games like Command & Conquer 3 or Call of Duty 4. It's deliberately that way, and some people won't like it. But the game does start to pick up once you get a few more planets going. It can get kind of crazy.

2. (condensed version) Pirates are dumb

There are ways to build anti-pirate defenses (lots of hangars/Gauss platforms). Putting a higher bounty on the other player is also a good way to avoid pirate attacks.

3. (condensed version) Resources accumulate slowly

Resources accumulate quickly once you get several planets going. I often get up to around 15 or 20 credits/second with only 3 to 4 planets. At 20 credits/second, that's 15 seconds to earn enough to build a frigate.

How many seconds does it take peons to collect enough gold in Warcraft 2 to train a grunt? It's comparable, at least. Same with Command & Conquer 3, which I was playing before picking up SoSE.

No game no matter how good is going to satisfy the wants of the entire market.

No matter what is done there will be people who are not happy with the game.

It has been noted that the two top topics are “the game is to fast” and “the game is to slow”.

In my opinion this game is not built for the quickly player but for those of us who want to immerse ourselves for a time into another world. One where what we do now will have an effect on the outcome of the game later.

This game is NOT for someone who wants instant gratification while playing. It is a thinking players game. It reminds me of the old board strategy games put out by SDI back in the 70’s. It took 3-6 months of 10 hours per week to play the game War in Europe.

Most people will find something to complain about in this game if you want to focus in detail at any one point, however, if you look at it from the stand point that no other games have all of this and do it so well over all.

This game will be around for quite awhile and will develop in time. It has a great start, it is high quality in its development, it is versatile in its format, it allows you to either go quickly (with a small game) or to really develop a master plan over time and match wits with others. Granted this game is not for everyone but I do say it is for those who love to escape the real earth for awhile and pretend they are masters of the universe. That is a mark of true entertainment value and this game has many other characteristics that mark it as such.. I suspect it will ultimately find itself with a following like Doom and Dungeons and Dragons had back in their day.

To the OP.

As mentioned by others you can change to game pace, i personally like playing slower only because it helps me think more about my "chess moves". This game is INCREDIBLY deep. There are so many dif ways to go (different emphasis on building/researching etc) which is great for learning.

One thing i am amazed by is the AI. They touted the AI being good but i am shocked. YOu can literally leave your defending forces be when you get attacked and the AI defends properly, traders move properly etc, so you can focus on the overall strategy.

Pirates: outside of my first game i have never had a problem with them. To me they seem like "rush protection" so you cant zerg your opponent, which i like. Starcraft is the ultimate zerg game, this is more of a build up game. The closest thing to it is SUpreme COmmander (which also had SUPER SLOW , SUPER BIG games). As mentioned before, manipulating the pirates IS super fun, once you get into that portion of the game. I love sending the pirates on onto one of my opponents bases and simultaniously attacking a different planet. It's great fun.

Again, if youre having trouble being rushed by pirates, BUILD SOME DEFENSES:) Hanger bays work wonders, and parking a capital ship at one of your planets thats a choke point between you and the pirates does the trick every time. And if you say, "but i cant protect everything" then remember this famous quote "The man that defends everything, defends nothing". Have a mobile defense force and work on intel tech so you see enemies coming your way.

cant really say much that hastn been said already. yeah, the game can be slow if you are used to other rts games, but that is part of the point. there is so much going on that using a pacing similar to starcraft would get you overwhelmed with information. plus, I personally like a somewhat slow pace, I also like pondering minutes for every turn in a TBS analyising the situation and creating/ modifying my master plan.

ps, yeah, a mobile force IS necessary for defending against a capable opponent. the trick is that once you have few planets (or they are spread out more) having a single big fleet wont work, you will need to split things up a bit.

one thing ive noticed is most of the people complaining its slow always talk about the beginning of the game
the middle usually has so much to in that portion of the game
maybe this argument will be solved devs in this way im formerly
requesting there be a slider put in the game creation menu to dictate how many planets are controlled by players

i.e. if its a 10 planet system with 2 players the max the slider will go to is 5
if theirs 3 players the max will be 5 planets
Would like to know other opinions about this
not quite sure how the placement of user controlled planets would work though
last thing you’d want is is a fuitsalad galaxy ie (all players planets mixed up)

any other ideas lets try solve this with construction as opposed to destruction

One thing I found after playing a few different games on different maps with different speeds is that a larger map will feel faster than a smaller map. So if you play a small 1v1 map expecting a lightning quick game you won't get that, nor will you get that snails pace you want on a huge map with 100 planets on slow speed. Well, you will technically but not exactly.

On small maps there are fewer planets and thus fewer resources, you have a small empire and thus less to do... so you feel like nothing is happening, the game is slow and you sit around waiting.

On larger maps you'll see the opposite effect, you'll have more planets bringing in more resources and more cash. You'll have larger fleets and so much to watch and do that the game will start to feel like it is moving much faster than expected.

These aren't facts min you, just my impressions after playing a few 'quick' games on small maps and some 'slow' games on larger maps. The good news is that I also learned that you have an immense amount of control over the pace of the game when you design your own maps with the released Galaxy Forge tool, the effect of placing planets futher (or closer) is amazing.

Hawk brings up solid points. When people call the game slow, they're referring to the start-up time, or the time it takes to establish a steady flow of income.

I'm actually confused by the OP. His complaints about the game are either because of lack of ability (Losing to pirates? lolz, is he even building a capital ship?) or because he never looked into what kind of game Sins was.

Maybe it has been a bit unclear in marketing about what type of game this is supposed to be...expectations seem to be all over the place.

Because this games not quite at true RTS speed and not quite at true 4x turn-based speed.

i agree completely and like it how it is BUT

if you give players the option to start out with a prebuilt empire then maybe it would appeal to more gamers (the more traditional rts gamers)

just trying to finde solutions to help ease the transition from traditional rts to a real rts were you have to think more

I played a map earlier that gave me an asteroid already, so it can be put into the map to allow each player to start off with 2 planets or a few asteroids.

Well Im 38. Over the years Ive played many...many..rts games. Ive just never really gotten in to them much with maybe the exception of Generals when it first came out. I played it pretty hardcore for about 2 months. I loved the fact on it that you could goof around with hackers and do a bit different things then most....but in the end it still was basically a tank rush game like all the others.

I even bought C&C3. PLayed single player for a couple nights. Did a few computer scrimmages and then never bothered going online as I knew the typical crowd would destroy me in 16 minutes or less based on what I had seen.

Im one of those players who likes to play a bit more deliberate. however games like MoO and GalCiv always were a bit too much for me. This game seems to hit that nice middle balance.

RTS action without needing to be a 16 minute tank factory.....4x without having to turn the rest of my hair grey.

The game has been marketed as a RTS/4X hybrid or a RTS with 4X elements. I see no reason it doesn't fit that bill, and most RTS games last about an hour anyway.

With that said, I'm going to retreat to my elitist ivory tower.

Ok, here's an example. Yesterday I joined a 2v2v2. About 50 minutes in, my partner has a high bounty on his head, so he disconnects. Of course, since this game is so slow, nothing really happened in this 50 mins. People scouted, some small skirmishes, etc. About 10 mins after my partner left, another person leaves. Now it's a 2v1v1 and the game is ruined. Total time wasted: little over an hour.

Eh, you're going to find that in pretty much any online game, where people bail the second they think they're going to lose. This isn't really a problem unique to this game. Perhaps you'd have better luck linking up with friends who you can count on to stick it through to the bitter end.

And people really leave because of an eminent pirate attack? That's ridiculous.

Resources come in far too slow. That does not mean I want the game to be a tank rush game, it means the game should not take 50 mins for people to get established.

That's more a case that you simply don't like the way the game is designed rather than it being evidence of a poorly designed game. I imagine that as people become more familiar with it, things will start moving a bit quicker.

like he said look for friends or friendly beta players (like me) there a lot out there just ask at stardock chat beta players mostly stay till the end or when you start a game make some rules not leaving and stuff
