Graphics Discussion

DX10 Anyone?

While I did not play in Beta, I perused plenty of screen shots prior to buying this game and they looked pretty good.

I have a high end rig so I cranked up all the graphic settings to max and while the graphics are ok, they are not as jaw dropping as I expected them to be.

Ships blowing up suddenly go from undamaged models to chunks of rubble in a flash rather than breaking up slowly as I would expect.

Is there plans for graphic updates or a DX10 executable/options?

There wont be DX10 support. That has to be made into the game at the beginning. I would think they didnt go that route because so few people have DX10 while the majority have DX9.

I agree about the ships breaking up thing Maybe a petition could do it Maybe added as an option?

Once more tools are released, users will start creating higher detailed textures, and better particle effects.

As for the ships slowly breaking down; sins doesn't have millions to spend on the design of this game. It just wouldn't be feasible with the time scale they had.

I realise they didn't have all that much time; I'm not complaining about it I'm just saying "hey, it would be cool if they could do this". I mean, even HW didn't really have breaking up ships. They had an animation of capital ships with explosions all over the ship, and debris afterwards, but no actual breaking up.

If the graphics were TOO good it would start slowing down the game ones a lot of action is happening on screen. They probably struck a good balance between quality and playability.

I say they should've gone whole Hog on the graphics department especially the ship detail/textures. In regards to performance I am sure most people out there have very good grfx cards that can handle a hell of a lot more. I am not sure we should suffer for the small amount of people which are still using old desktops/laptops/grfx cards, either upgrade or get a console. I mean some of the specs I've seen thrown around are seriously Dell Latitude like.

I understnad about making the game as playable as possible across as many platforms as possible, but there should be options for those that have higer end rigs to get better graphics.

Dx10 does not have to be added from the beggining. Lord of the Rings Online added Dx10 graphics months after the game launched.

So DX10 can still be added to Sins.

Turbine could make some sort of high resolution/partical effects, etc pack to download and install as an option.

There is a promise (of sorts) to release an ultra high resoultion graphics pack in the near future for those of us with high-end systems - only time will tell however.

I am not sure we should suffer for the small amount of people which are still using old desktops/laptops/grfx cards, either upgrade or get a console.


Unfortunately its not just a small amount of people using older equipment. As valve surveys have showed, only small amounts of people have access to the latest high end technology. Plus not all pc gamers want consoles (not likely to find this sort of game on PS3 any time soon now are we) so to exclude gamers on the basis that they dont have the funds to upgrade (or a real need) isn't exactly fair. Or logical for that matter.

The textures were painted at double res in most instances. So they already exist(for the most part) the game was optimized, compromise had to me bad on texture sizes.

DX10 is not a magical software update that automatically makes everything look like it came directly out of Star Wars. You can do neat stuff with it but saying "oh we should just have DX10 in the game" means absolutely nothing.
