Because I never got to play the game... I need your statements of support.

Hello.

Sorry to bother everyone, but I just thought of a post I wanted to ask.

You see, I'm completely devoid of RTS experience, barring the first two missions of Starcraft, if you think those count.

Can I play this game more or less like a Civilizations IV game where I don't really have to fight or anything if I don't want to? I mean... just explore and colonize and make ships and have things fight (and win) for me automatically?

I read some previews, and they say that you can basically automate certain aspects of the game, but I guess I wanted to hear it from the fanbase.

Will a complete and utter newbie to RTS gameplay be able to enjoy this game?

Yes most of the combat can be handled by the ai u just tell your fleet where to go and they can do all the rest it is a very simple game to understand.

Though I've not played this either, it sounds to me like you could enjoy this as a total 4x, at least to begin with. I think one major difference between this and a true 4x is that the only way to win truly is through (at least) eventual military conquest. Diplomacy, economics, culture, etc seem to support the conquest idea on its own, unless there is a victory condition (as in Galciv 2) allowing 2/3rds domination by culture, or alliance with all factions...

As to the RTS experience, the fact that automation plays such a big part seems to me as a fantastic way to introduce a 4x diehard fan to RTS without too much punishment on the point of military defeat. Starcraft or warcraft micro (the term given to the need to tell your units specifically what to do, all the time - a result of little or no automation in unit behaviour AI) will not be needed in this game as I understand it. Useful RTS experience might arise from games like homeworld or even supreme commander.

Sorry to keep coming with a reply, but I've heard that a demo for this game will be released about a month after US release. If you're hesitant about buying a game you're not sure you could play, simply delay buying it until the demo comes out that way you'll find out for sure.

The units will auto-attack everything in the sector they are in, so if you dont feel comfortable with rts games you can just tell them to move into a sector and then leave them to their own business if you want =P

Hi Victor, 
If you are playing on easy AI, with the defensive personality, you can have all kinds of fun scouting the galaxy, finding artifacts, space anomolies and planets with special bonuses, without having to worry much about combat. Sort of like a real-time GalCiv that you can pause. You can build a thriving trade empire, and take over solar systems with strong cultural influence. You can work your way up the research tree with 100 or so topics per race, and level up your ships (against small NPC bands and pirates or by purchasing your levels).

You will need to do a bit of combat to gain planets, but your own unit AI is smart enough to handle smaller battles on its own. I would just scout ahead to see what locals are protecting a planet, then build up a good fleet to outnumber or counter them effectively. Turn on auto-attack and auto-abilities, tell your ships to hyperspace to the planet and watch the action like a movie with the cinematic view. (Note to competitive multiplayers - tactics will make a significant difference in battle)  I think this post would be worth reading:
