Terrain Idea- Irregular shaped grav-wells

So I was think it might be cool to have asteroid fields generate a gravwell and be connected via phase lanes like a regular asteroid planet... the difference being

1. you can't colonize it? (Some no man's land would be nice)

2. Due to the size and length of the debris field a oblong/ovalist or even fully curved gravity well results. This could be a well smaller than a star's but bigger than a planet's and most importantly its position could really create more interesting situations. It can be positioned so that going one route is significant longer than another due to the shape of this gravwell instead of merely its position.

Also since no one owns it, and due to the debris field, perhaps it has in-system fog of war?

I love your idea.

But it doesn't look like it will be implemented.

I'd like it too -- dead asteroids are nice, but some genuine no-mans lands would be nice.

Call is "disrupted phase space" and say its a place where, for some reason, the phase drives won't work. (Because the alternate space, phase space, they operate in is somehow damaged or damaging?)

Imho they should implement it somehow like this:

It should be definable in the map file (ie. in the *.galaxy file) via coordinates which represent the boundaries of the field.

For example:
GravFieldCount1
GravFieldCorner 4
Corner0 [ 125 , 30 ]
Corner1 [ 130 , 30 ]
Corner2 [ 130 , 40 ]
Corner3 [ 125 , 40 ]

This would create a rectangle of a grav field in the mentioned coordinates which would belong to the planet where I've located it beneath.

I just would love it if I could create special grav fields with a form I decide.

Yeah that would be great, especially for people who want more 'openess' we definately need to be able to mod/map edit multiple planets to a grav well.

I'm all for this idea.

I kinda like a no man land idea too, for the shake of having an open battle environment. Think about it, right now it's either we're fighting at home or at somebody's home, it'll be nice to fight on a neutral ground.


And since it's a no man land the geomytry can be a little different, not a sector with a rock in the middle (well, a planet, a sun, a dead astroid, an astroid, they are sometype of rock), it can be a nebula field or a debris field. Think how in most sector the rock and building take up a large chunk of space, it'll be nice to have all that space for pure ship action

Yup; frankly a key improvement to this game would just be terrain, more planet types, more effects based on gravity and terrain. Empty space gravity wells... both large and small. Asteroid fields and nebulas with wierdly shaped gravity wells. Medium sized systems with 2 planet asteroids, perhaps a few 'stretched' grav wells... the ocassional twisting of gravity based on the shape of the planet.

Not to mention it would be cool to have moons, and the occasional planet in the same system/well of the sun.

I'd like there to be gravity... in the gravity wells... Gravity that pulled ships towards the centers of mass... and slowed the velocity of things trying to leave it... and accelerated things going towards it...


that's what I think should be done with gravity wells... have gravity in them...
