Toothpaste at the Dollar Store

Warning not to buy

If you shop at the Dollar Stores or any discount stores for that matter where they sell toothpaste, particularly those that are a copy of Colgate toothpaste, there is a warning not to buy that type because they are mixed with dangerous chemicals. The type of chemicals that is put in antifreeze!

One thing to look out for is mispellings on the packages. The following brands are also found to contain this chemical Cooldent, Clean Rite and Oralmax. These are the brands sold by Dollar General and Family Dollar stores.

True but almost any glycol derivative has a low but meaningful toxicity and shouldn't be swallowed in any quantity. Cough syrup is a very bad place to have it especially if it is being used as a drug to get high with (really common in Central America). You will find glycols in many product like mouthwas which are not intended to be swallowed. In fact most toothpastes have a glycol in them that is also poisonous, hence the reason that little kids need to be supervised with the stuff to ensure they don't gulp down a tube or two.

I usually supervise my youngest, she loves to eat the toothpaste, bubble gum flavored children type.

I saw the report.  The question is who was selling it (to the stores), and how?  Colgate claims it is not theirs.

These are the brands sold by Dollar General

I wouldn't be surprised if the Dollar General store by our house tries to sell out all of their contaminated product. After all, they did get in trouble for continuing to sell tainted dog food.

A rather familiar problem in my part of the world. Bargain "dollar" stores are only good for stationary and tupperware boxes. I never dare buy things like toothpaste or food items from these places.

This is true, the ADA or CDA seal of approval is definately good to look out for!

They are good for the dry goods. I've bought chocolate and nuts and soda but I look out for the genuine name brands because the one I shop at do carry items that other stores around our area don't want anymore for their inventory out of season purpose. It's really a matter of buyer be aware than anything else.
