I think more stations and station types would be pretty cool. They could divide into three major types:
Space City, pretty much a extension of the planet. Each planet can only build one except Dead Asteroid Planets (would no longer be only annoying speed bumps) which can build two. They could add tax revenue and spawn, say, half the number of Trade Ships that a Trade Station uses, and 1/4 of the Refinery Ships Orbital Refineries spawn.
Military Posts would only allow themselves to be built once per planet. They would provide fighters, possibly four squadrons? They would also have the abilities of Repair Facilities (half efficient though), and have good fire power.
The last type would be Economic Stations, which would research at half the efficiency of Research Stations, but provide twice the number of trade ships vs Trade Stations and 3/2 the number of Refinery Ships as Refineries. Only one per system.
All three should apply efficiency increase to similar structures, units, and the planet (ie Military Post gives a accuracy boast to all military vessels in the gravity well) All planets can build only ONE station, but Dead Asteroids can build two, be it two Cities or a City and another type.
huh... sounds expensive though.
I was thinking core planet and terrestrian/high developed planets only.
