Not the bar, Einstein, but the antimatter in the fuel tank. This loss would be represented the same way as any other antimatter consumption would: a less than full bar. Get it? "that renders portions of it unuseable" ... "it" being antimatter. "portions" meaning less than all of it.

What if the phase jump functions like this.

To open the jump into phase-space takes an infinitesimal portion of energy, because at that moment the phase space is infinitesimal in size. The longer the jump takes the larger the amount of energy is needed to form the phase-space. Phase-space can be imagined as a tunnel, though in reality you can't see it or describe its shape since its form is defined by the energy of the jump. (And really it wouldn't be a tunnel, but its a useful analogy.) The longer the jump, the bigger the tunnel, the more energy is needed.

When the ship reaches the end of its trip it reconnects the phase-space to normal space and exits. The energy used to maintain the phase-space is the boundaries of the phase-space, and when you exit the phase-space it remains within. Leaving you with a depleted stock of anti-matter.

What happens to the energy and the phase-space then is conjecture. No one can observe it or re-enter that particular phase-space, so does it still exist? Perhaps the energy reenters the galaxy in some way. Perhaps phase-jumps are depleting the energy of the universe by trapping it within individual phase-spaces.

If ships can communicate from within phase-space, they may be using an "ansible" to communicate with others outside of phase-space. I don't really understand or want to get into a discussion of quantum mechanics but there's one possibility. In addition if ships are within separate phase-spaces they cannot meet in transit.

After a Phase Space jump, a portion of the anti-matter a ship has "vanishes" and needs to be replenished (which happens naturally from the Star). That's how it appears in-game to the player.
