Oh Man! I Just HAVE To Knit One Of These!

It's an illusion scarf, Mason, and it's very easy to knit. It looks like a regular scarf but when you turn it to a different angle you'll be able to see the pattern.

You can knit and you can purl, and that's all you need. It's just a mix of those two. No yarn overs, no ssk's no decreases and no increases. Easy.

I appreciate the offer, but I'm really wanting to do this one myself. I've just been doing some reading on illusion knitting and it does actually look pretty simple. It looks like the hardest part will simply be keeping track of where you are in the pattern as you go.

I was all concerned about having to carry the colors and all that as I haven't tried to tackle knitting with multiple colors, but with illusion knitting that doesn't look like any problem. It's not as complicated as Fair Isle knitting and one can simply carry the odd color up the side for two rows. Seems simple enough.

I think I know what my next project is going to be.

You're quite welcome. Once you get some Linux experience under your belt and are feeling pretty comfortable with the command line, give Slackware a shot. There's a reason why it's the oldest distro still in use. If you're of the do-it-yourself ilk, you'll love it. Far faster than Mepis or most other distros, and rock solid stable.

Mason: you can get row counters. I have one that I simply click and it keeps track of the rows (up to 100, then you have to reset it) or there are ones that fit on your needles and you have to turn them manually.

You're right about the yarn being carried at the end of the rows. All you have to do it make a little twist to keep the yarn from sagging.

It's knitted in a tube and the numbers are done in Fair Isle. Just for the reconrd, Fair Isle knitting scares me almost as much as steeking does, but I'd be prepared to try and overcome my fear to make this for someone.

(for those who are not familiar with knitting terms, steeking is when you cut holes in your knitting to place a sleeve or make an edge where there wasn't one before. For example, say I was knitting a cardigan. Instead of knitting 2 fronts and one back, I'd knit one big tube and 2 sleeves and steek the tube to create arm holes and a divided front. It's scary stuff......)

You could start your own damn store!!!") tomorrow and cast it on. It's a pretty big scarf and whilst I will try my best to get it finished in time for you to wear it at least once this season, you may have to store it over the summer. I'll do my best, though.

Completely understandable if you don't have the time, don't want to make it a commercial exercise, etc., but it is a very slick looking item and one I'd love to have here too (and I don't mind paying for the handiwork if it's not terribly expensive).
