Was going to ask what time you got there, but notice the answer in comments above. Would expect about the same. Most of the "great deals" happen between say 4am - 6am (whatever time the store opens, normally early) and approximately 1 hour, at the most 2 hours, later. By the end of the 1 to 2 hour window of time all of the "great deals" have been claimed by the early birds out shopping for the limited quantity items.
By the time you got there, everything was probably pretty well picked over, the store was probably cleaned back up some, and things were more "normal."
With that said, I've been lucky enough to go to Wally World a few times recently and once was one of the experiences you described in the original article -- the place was actually not that busy, easy to move around in, and service was surprisingly fast. I was amazed. Normally it's the land where time stands still, lines that never move, and aisles you can't even move down because the place is packed to the rafters with bargain shoppers.
When they aren't overly busy, Wally World isn't a bad store, but I'd rather avoid the place most of the time just to avoid the crowds there.
