or; surrogate mothers?

So I had come home for lunch, and was just about to head back to work, when my little sister turned on the TV to one of the soapies, Days of Our Lives. I guess there're some characters on there that want to have a child and seem to be unable, so they are having their fertilized egg implanted in the uterus of another woman.

It got me to thinking. Why would someone volunteer to carry the child of another?

Talk about noble. But I just don't quite get surrogate mothering. Adoption . . . I get. It's the reason I have two little sisters instead of the family just ending with me. But with both of them, it was a case of their parents not being ready or capable of caring for their child, so they willingly gave them up to a family that could take care of them.

But as a surrogate mother, you're being implanted with the fertilized egg of another woman. (In other words, you get none of the fun parts that come with the babymaking process . . .

Then you are essentially a baby incubator until the child is ready to be taken from you - not your child, remember, and given to the egg-donating parents.

Like I said, noble, I suppose. but I can't figure out why the hell anyone would be willing to go to all that effort. Maybe I just don't get it - if someone here does, please enlighten a poor unfortunate soul.

But what do any of you think about surrogate motherhood?

Like I said, noble, I suppose. but I can't figure out why the hell anyone would be willing to go to all that effort.

I think it's the money that motivates these women. I'm sure they get paid alot! I dont think i would do it. I'm already scared enough to have my own babies i dont think i'd be willing to put my body through that for money. It's some kind of prostitution thinking about it: you're renting your body in a way.

But i suppose it's the dream come true for some people.

That's kind of how I was feeling about it when I decided to write this article this afternoon, Em, but i didn't want to seem to incendiary in the actual article, in case anyone here has been a surrogate mother.

All I know is that they better get paid a whole boatload of cash to do something like that.

I personally don't think that there is enough money in the world to make me want to do that. I think it all depends on the motivation of the people that are doing it. If a woman has a child, and realises that is it the most precious gift you can ever have, and then she meets someone who is unable to have babies, and wants to help them, then that is noble. However, if it is some snotty nosed young girl, who just wants the money, and doesn't realise what she is putting herself, and her body through, then that is wrong. I said young girl, because when you see these things on television, they always pick on them, because apparently girls my age don't know their arse from their elbow.

Except for the actual fertilization process used in our modern times, this isn't anything new. Even in ancient times if a king and queen or some other wealthy couple were unable to produce an heir they would often pay a servant or other woman to do so. Of course the process was done the old fashioned way then.

I just don't know how they can feel it growing and kicking and give birth and want to let go of the baby. Even if it isn't "biologically" your child, I think it would be incredibly hard to let it go and just move on with your life.

I don't think it's always money motivated. I have heard stories where the sister or the mother carries it. I think that is motivated by the desire helping somone in your family. Hey my uterus works! Can I help you out? I think that would be really weird. "Okay Little Johnny, you're our baby but you grew in grandma's tummy." Definately a movie of the week or a soap opera plot.

Law and Order had an episode of "Paying for a baby". If you saw that, you would understand how some women really have no soul.

But this is different it seems. A person willing to carry a Child not hers and give it up? I have heard sisters and Mothers do it (and that was for love). But it is hard to imagine Jane Doe doing it.

I couldn't do it unless it were for my sister. I couldn't carry a baby and then just give it over and not be involved in that child's life. Maybe I am just too selfish. I do think some women do it for money but I certainly couldn't.

Like I say, though, I think this is totally different then adoption. Adoption is the reason I have sisters, and I have so much respect for their birthmothers, but I think this is way, way different.

Some women REALLY REALLY enjoy pregnancy and have very healthy, successful pregnancies.

I lean in that direction (barring the morning sickness, ugh).

A woman who enjoys pregnancy is satisfied with the size of her own family might really love to experience pregnancy and childbirth again. Although I have a hard time wrapping my head around being able to give up the child you've nourished in your womb.

I don't think it's always a selfish, money-grubbing move. (I don't know if you guys all realize what the process entails, but the the pain, exhaustion, etc., involved in getting the pregnancy going is worth A LOT OF COMPENSATION.)

Thanks for your comment, Tex. Even most of the moms who have commented have not been able to explain it this thoroughly. I personally think it would be a righteous pain in the ASS to have another child for someone else. But again, grateful for adoption, even when the little sisters are at their most annoying.
